The two worms coiling at either side are not the romantic symbolism of serpents, there is no Eden here, no ancient wisdom, no seduction. Worms belong to the earth and to what the earth reclaims. They are the agents of breakdown, of the slow patient process that turns what has died into the conditions for something new to live. They do not witness the awakening from a distance. They are part of it. They are what happens to everything that had to be shed for this moment to exist.
